Daria Kasatkina Announces Season Hiatus Citing ‘Mental Stress’
Australia's top-ranked WTA competitor has decided to step away until the end of the tennis calendar, stating she is at her “emotional and mental breaking point.”
Factors Leading to the Announcement
Daria Kasatkina, who this year altered her nationality from Russia to Australia, blamed the move for contributing to immense “psychological stress.”
Further contributors included the ongoing difficulty of being distant from her family and the grueling competition calendar.
“I've been far from fine for a extended duration and, to be frank, my match outcomes and showings demonstrate it,” she wrote on digital platforms.
She added, “Truth is, I've hit a wall and am unable to proceed. I require time off. A break from the tedious cycle of the tennis circuit, the suitcases, the outcomes, the pressure, the familiar opponents (apologies, ladies), all aspects of this life.”
Individual Challenges and Upcoming Goals
“There's only so much I can manage and handle as a female athlete, all whilst battling the leading players in the world.”
“Should this be seen as weakness, then so be it, it's true. But, I know I am strong and will grow by taking time off, recharging, regrouping and renewing. The moment has come I heeded my own needs for a change, my thoughts, my feelings and my health.”
She chose to switch citizenship after exiting her home country due to safety concerns, having publicly spoken against the nation's legislation targeting LGBTQ+ individuals and the conflict in Ukraine. First living in Dubai, she moved to Melbourne and secured long-term status in the spring.
She then announced her engagement to partner Natalia Zabiiako, who previously earned a silver medal for her birth country at the PyeongChang Games after first representing for her birth nation Estonia.
She further mentioned she has been unable to visit her parent, who stayed behind in Russia, for four years.
Professional Background
A major tournament contender in 2022, Kasatkina had ended the last four calendar years ranked in the top ten but is now 19th after a modest season where she secured 19 victories against 21 defeats.
She is likely to drop out of the top 20 by the time the home major begins.
The professional athlete announced she will return in 2026, “refreshed and prepared,” with the lead-in to her domestic major expected to be a return target.
Industry Impact
The nation's next best competitor is Maya Joint, holding the 35th position.
She is the third top WTA competitor to cut short their year, following two other stars, amid a growing pattern of players retiring mid-match.
The tour governing body mandates leading players to compete in a set number of tournaments, including the four grand slams, 10 WTA 1,000 events, and additional WTA events.
But top-ranked player the Polish star remarked in the past, “There's no way to squeeze it in the schedule. Maybe I will have to choose some tournaments and skip them, although they are mandatory.
“We must think carefully about it - not really unfortunately care about the rules and just focus on what's healthy for us.”
