Mikel Arteta Praises a More Dependable Squad and Acknowledges Havertz Injury Blow.

The Gunners' boss has expressed confidence that his team can continue to cope with fitness issues following confirming that forward Kai Havertz remains out for the coming weeks.

Extended Absence for Havertz

The Germany international has been absent since the summer due to knee surgery. Originally slated to return earlier in December, Arteta explained the player faced a hurdle when increasing his recovery and was unable to move forward “to the next level.”

“Our experience helped us build a squad that is considerably steadier and has greater depth,” commented Arteta.

Selection Dilemma for Midweek Fixture

This news creates a selection headache for the midweek fixture at the Emirates against Brentford. Arteta must choose between continuing to use Mikel Merino, who got a goal as a makeshift striker against Chelsea, or reinstating Viktor Gyökeres, who made a return off the bench as a substitute. Long-term absentee Gabriel Jesus remains available post-recovery.

Fitness Doubts Remain

Additional concerns affect centre-back William Saliba and winger Leandro Trossard, who were absent for the Chelsea match. Consequently, recent arrivals Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié will probably continue in the heart of the defence for the Premier League front-runners.

Arteta feels the £250m spend on new players during the summer has resulted in a more robust situation to handle such absences.

Greater Options Vital for Premier League Pursuit

Questioned if increased squad depth was aiding their championship push, Arteta was emphatic. “Yes, as this campaign has presented greater challenges in some areas, and now the problems with the defence,” he noted.

“We learned from the past that we have to use players in different positions, and they need to be prepared to adapt to new tasks if we are to fight at this level. And the case of Mikel is probably the prime illustration.”

Arteta's Support for Suffering Havertz

Speaking about the setback previously mentioned by national team coach Julian Nagelsmann, Arteta provided more insight. “He was doing everything. He could not go to the next level and now the signs are like we have overcome that hurdle.”

The manager conveyed his keenness to have him back. “The team is keen to have him. Honestly, it’s a player that, personally, I value highly for the qualities he offers to the team, but his personality, his attitude. I see him suffer being outside.”

“His fitness history is phenomenal, he's usually fit, and I can’t wait to have him back with the squad on the pitch because I believe it’s going to be a significant uplift.”
