World Health Organization Confronts Significant Workforce Cuts Following United States Funding Withdrawal

The global health organization has announced intentions to cut its workforce by almost a quarter – totaling over 2,000 positions – before the middle of 2026.

Funding Shortfall Prompts Major Restructuring

This move follows following the US, previously the agency's biggest donor, withdrew financial support earlier this year.

The US government was contributing approximately 18% of the organization's total funding, causing a substantial budgetary shortfall.

Projected Staff Cuts

Based on organizational projections, the workforce will decrease from nine thousand four hundred and one posts in January 2025 to approximately seven thousand and thirty by June 2026.

The reduction of two thousand three hundred and seventy-one posts comprises staff reductions, retirements, and natural attrition.

"The past year was one of the most difficult in our history, as we undertook a painful but necessary process of prioritisation and realignment," commented the organization's director-general.

Budget Gap Remains

The Switzerland-headquartered organization currently faces a funding shortfall of $1.06bn for the upcoming period, representing nearly a fourth of its total funding.

The figure marks an improvement from a previous projected gap of 1.7 billion dollars reported in spring.

Not Included Funding

The budget calculations exclude a further 1.1 billion dollars in potential contributions from current discussions with various contributors.

A spokesperson for the agency stated that the current unsecured portion of the biennial budget is in fact smaller than in earlier years, attributing this to several reasons:

  • A smaller overall budget
  • Initiation of a new donor outreach campaign
  • Higher in member states' required fees

The restructuring process is currently nearing its end, allowing the agency to move forward with a renewed structure.
