During an inauguration day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “transform” New York City, ushering in “a fresh chapter” and an bold start to his term.

An Unprecedented Leader

The young political star, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

“A moment like this is rare and even more uncommon is it that the public whose hands are upon the levers of change,” Mamdani added.

Ignoring counsel to temper hopes, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will rule expansively and audaciously.”

Governing with Democratic Socialist Convictions

Mamdani openly embraced his socialist politics. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not forsake my convictions for fear of being called radical,” he said to loud cheers.

The inauguration was a dual event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a former subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's ascent as a victory over powerful interests.

A Sweeping Platform

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a platform featuring:

• Universal childcare
• Fare-free public buses
• A halt to rent increases for about 1 million households
• A experiment of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion cost of these programs may pose a hurdle to fund. Mamdani has vowed to raise taxes on the richest residents and corporations. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing External Dynamics

The new mayor also faces skepticism from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past criticisms regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a appointments director resigned over offensive past comments.

Mamdani has moved to address these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was described as unexpectedly cordial.

The Fundamental Challenges of Governing

Traditionally, New York mayors are judged on their success in delivering basic services: trash collection, reducing the rodent problem, repairing potholes, and making sure reliable subway operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's public safety record, citing record low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with murders recorded.

As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a unusual warning about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his address with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
